Wildlife webcams

Our wildlife web cameras represent a unique way of observing animal behaviour with minimal disturbance to the animals, allowing natural behaviours to be displayed and recorded.

Small birds need to gain enough energy to survive the long, cold winter nights and habitat destruction has caused a reduction in the natural food supply for birds. Putting out food for birds is one way of ensuring the survival of bird species.

This wildlife webcam is focused on a number of bird feeders at the Brackenhurst campus. The feeders provide a range of food to attract a variety of bird species. Staff and students use the webcam to monitor a number of different factors including bird numbers, species diversity and dominance interactions. The birds are also trapped and fitted with a unique metal ring on one leg to individually identify them. A number of birds have additional colour rings (in unique combinations) on their legs so they can be individually identified on the web camera. This aids research on behavioural ecology and conservation projects.

The British Trust for Ornithology's National Nest Box Week (14-21 February)
Habitat destruction has caused a reduction in the number of natural nest sites for birds but putting up bird boxes can help to provide a remedy. Many birds are starting to pair up, look for suitable nesting sites and establish territories, so now is the perfect time to erect bird boxes in your local area.

Nest Box Cameras
There are over 150 nest boxes of various types around the Brackenhurst campus. Staff and students monitor breeding success in the nest boxes each year and investigate projects such as habitat use, productivity and survival. During the breeding season we have several web cameras focused in nest boxes of species including blue tit, house sparrow and barn swallow.
