The badger is a large, black and white, nocturnal mammal that inhabits underground systems of tunnels and nesting areas known as setts. Although the population of badgers in the UK is relatively stable, they are protected under a number of laws due to threat from diggers and baiters.

Badger setts are surveyed each year on the Brackenhurst campus and a badger watch week - where staff and students observe badger behaviour - is undertaken each year. A number of students have undertaken final year research projects on badgers and have investigated topics including territory boundary advertisement and behavioural enrichment.
