Harvest mouse (Micromys minutus)

The harvest mouse is the smallest mouse species in the UK and weaves nests of grass above the ground. Changes in agricultural practice and habitat management are thought to have caused a decline in harvest mice in the last century.

Harvest mouse nests have been surveyed across the campus for the past couple of years. A number of students have undertaken final year research projects on harvest mice and have investigated topics including nest position in relation to field boundaries, and the dispersal of harvest mice in hedgerows.
