Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)

Yellowhammers are a typical farmland bird species but are on the red list of conservation concern due to their recent decline thought to have been brought about by the intensification of agriculture during the last century.

Yellowhammers are being studied on the Brackenhurst campus in conjunction with South Nottinghamshire Ringing Group, where around 5% of the nation’s yellowhammers were ringed last year. It is hoped that a number of students will aid in the yellowhammer research and investigate projects such as habitat use, territoriality and sexual selection.
