Tree sparrow (Passer montanus)

The tree sparrow is a species typical of agricultural environments. However, due to the intensification of agriculture the tree sparrow has suffered a 95% decline in the past 30 years and is on the red list of conservation concern. Small populations of tree sparrow are present in the UK with many of these being in the Midlands.

Tree sparrows are being studied on the Brackenhurst campus in conjunction with South Nottinghamshire Ringing Group, via the use of nest boxes to aid in monitoring breeding success and winter ringing to determine population size. It is hoped that a number of students will aid in the tree sparrow research and investigate projects such as habitat use and survival.
