House sparrow (Passer domesticus)

House sparrows are typical urban birds but are on the red list of conservation concern due to their recent dramatic decline. One of the reasons for this decline is thought to be a loss of feeding habitat in urban areas.

House sparrows are being studied on the Brackenhurst campus in conjunction with South Nottinghamshire Ringing Group, via the use of nest boxes to aid in monitoring breeding success. It is hoped that a number of students will aid in the house sparrow research and investigate projects such as habitat use, productivity and survival.
