Great crested newt (Triturus cristatus)

The great crested newt is the largest of the British newt species. It is now protected under law as it has undergone a dramatic decline over recent years, largely due to habitat destruction and fragmentation.

The great crested newt population is surveyed each year on the Brackenhurst campus. A number of students have undertaken final year research projects on great crested newts, including an investigation into the use of different coloured egg-laying substrates.
