Working with the animal unit

The Animal Unit is adjacent to the Veterinary Nursing Centre and allows the use of the small animals in veterinary nursing practical sessions.

Our first year students complete Animal Unit industry experience sessions once a week where they experience the routine of animal cleaning and feeding. They also participate in health checks on all animals in the unit to practice their observation skills.

There are three animal handling rooms where teaching staff demonstrate the correct techniques for animal handling, health checks and other animal health issues. One of these is also an anatomy room which houses a diverse collection of skeletal and tissue specimens including a full size horse skeleton. All of our animal handling rooms have projection equipment allowing the easy conversion from practical space to lecture area.
