Placement position: Trainee Assistant Merchandiser
Could you tell me about your work placement?
You might expect to be making tea and running errands, however from the first day I was given a lot of responsibility which really helps you get involved in the department. I was involved in all the day-to-day tasks of a merchandiser such as Monday reporting, organising intake, liaising with suppliers and as the year moved on I became involved in a lot more. I felt like one of the team rather than a student. The whole year helps build your organisational and communication skills and importantly helps boost your confidence.
What was the highlight of your placement year?
I have to say the highlight is the people you meet. I have become so close with my team, and have met all different people from so many parts of the industry. They have made my experience positive, and I never know when I will meet them again in my future career.
Has your placement experience helped you make a decision regarding your future career?
The placement year has been really helpful to make a decision for my future. A lot of my course friends have found a job they enjoy, and will hopefully be asked back upon leaving university. Although I enjoy my job, it has made me realise my strengths and weaknesses and I have learnt a lot about myself. This has made me broaden my views on what I will pursue after university, and although it feels like a step back I am going to try a role in PR.
Would you recommend NTU and your course?
In short, yes! This course allows you to get an in depth look at all aspects of the industry, you really appreciate the broad knowledge you have acquired when getting a job, and can quite often find yourself answering other peoples questions when you get into industry.
