Rugmark Ethical Rug Design Competition 2008: winner

Ruchi wins Rugmark – Ethical Rug Design Competition

MA Textile Design and Innovation student, Ruchi Kaura, won the competition with her outstanding design based around memories.

This was the first year for the competition, which aims to raise awareness about the ethics of rug manufacturing amongst design students and interior designers. Her prize was a trip to Kathmandu to see her rug being hand knotted by skilled artisans.

RugMark is a global, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing a better life for thousands of children working illegally in the rug industry across South Asia.

During her visit to the factories, Ruchi was guided through the complete process of rug manufacturing and saw all the steps right from spinning the yarn to knotting the rug on the loom.

Ruchi graduated in Fashion Design from the National Institute Of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, India in 2002, and worked for export houses for four years before deciding to undertake Masters study in Textile Design and Innovation at Nottingham Trent University.

"Doing my Masters has not only enhanced my art toolbox, but has also set me on an everlasting spiritual journey of finding myself as a designer."
