Lace: heritage and contemporary textile practice

Date:
Friday 16 November 2012
Time:
9.30 am - 8 pm
Event:
Lace: heritage and contemporary textile practice
Location:
Newton building, Goldsmith Street, City site, Nottingham NG1 4BU

Details:

This event has been curated to captivate its audience with speakers who engage with lace in a variety of ways: history, manufacture, international curatorship and as practicing artists or designers. The speakers include Professor Julian Ellis OBE, Professor Lesley Millar MBE and Paul Simmons of Timorous Beasties.

The purpose of the symposium is to consider how lace, as a manufactured product, part of national heritage and with strong connotations is currently being viewed, re-interpreted, and celebrated within art and design culture. Key note speakers will develop themes and discussion points for the audience to consider and engage with.

During the day there will also be an opportunity for a tour of the Journeys in Lace exhibition taking place in the Bonington Gallery and the unique Nottingham Trent University lace archive.

The symposium will lead on to a launch event at Nottingham Castle Warped, an evening of Nottingham Lace, Shadow-Side curated by NTU PhD student Nicola Donovan and the private view of Lace Works: contemporary art and Nottingham lace which includes the work of Lucy Brown, Joy Buttress, Nicola Donovan, Cal Lane, Teresa Whitfield and Timorous Beasties.
