Commissioning research
Our applied research provides real business solutions to industry, commerce and the professions. We offer a flexible and dynamic research consultancy service, which provides the information, the resources and the expertise to make business decisions. Whether you want to improve your understanding of your customers and competitors, or are looking for new opportunities, we can help.
Unlike other universities, our blue skies research isn't just about offering you market research findings alone. We translate research findings into practical managerial policies that you can apply directly to your business to make a real difference.
Research undertaken by the University is broad and varied, as can be seen in some of our previous and current projects.
Scientists at NTU joined forces with the prestigious US university, Tufts, to pioneer collaborative research in protein fusion which explores innovative ways of combining the toughness of spider silk with the intricate structure of silica.
The School has worked with packaging suppliers to investigate how design thinking and practice can contribute to more responsible approaches to the use and disposal of fast moving consumer goods and services. The focus of this work included the investigation of materials, the conditions for innovation and understanding the user experience. Research has also been undertaken in the areas of sustainable design and the public perception of sustainable textiles and clothing.
The School is currently combining thermal monitoring, condition monitoring and remote systems to develop new models of energy and other resource capture, use and distribution. Projects include investigations of the use of thermal probes, indigenous building materials, water power, water use, green roofs and temporary structures.
Current research within the School includes the investigation of seasonal affective disorder and colour vision in the horse and its importance in management and training. Investigation of glacial sedimentology and geomorphology has also been carried out in countries such as Iceland and Switzerland.
The Centre for Legal Research provided legal expertise to the European Lifestyles and Marine Ecosystems (ELME) project. This multidisciplinary and multinational project brought together marine scientists, environmental economists and other academics from 15 countries to model the past and future environmental impact of human lifestyles on Europe’s regional seas.
The Emergency Services Research Unit (ESRU) conducts award-winning research, teaching, training and consultancy and has been commissioned by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and a number of regional fire and rescue services. ESRU members have undertaken research into the psychological problems faced by emergency services workers – one of several projects bringing international acclaim to the research unit.
