Small group teaching Ann Meredith
For the purposes of this material, the term small group teaching refers to teaching and learning activities involving groups
of less than twenty students. This might include working with students in seminars, tutorials, workshops and learning sets.
Smaller groups can offer the opportunity for students and tutors to work collaboratively, share ideas and also offer valuable
social contact for students. They can be an extremely rewarding element of academic practice. Small group sessions can, however,
also become frustrating when things don't go to plan and there's a risk that they revert to mini-lectures. A major factor
in making small group sessions good learning experiences for all concerned is effective planning, so we have included some
materials on this in this section.
