Small Group Teaching: Key texts
Introduction In selecting what to include in this section we have chosen a text that offers a theoretical context within which to consider
the role of your small group teaching. In particular, chapters 1-5 provide useful context and practical suggestions about
the learning activities you might consider using to ensure that you are providing students with relevant, effective and accessible
learning opportunities through your small group teaching.
Biggs, J, 2003. Teaching for Quality Learning at University. 2rd ed. Maidenhead: Open University Press.
Biggs’ overall purpose is to offer a clear, research-informed introduction to the theory and practice of university teaching
in the light of ongoing developments within higher education in the UK.
His primary concern is to inform the reader’s development as a teacher, with particular emphasis on student learning in the
context of constructive alignment - an approach to learning and teaching that ensures appropriate alignment of learning outcomes,
learning and teaching activities and assessment.
Of particular use for small group teaching is chapter five ‘Good Teaching: Principles and Practice’, which offers a concise
theoretical background and practical solutions to a variety of teaching scenarios.
Please note: A third edition of this text was published in November 2007.
