Section 3: Course Design
- The principal responsibility for course design lies with the course sponsor, although advice and guidance is available.
- A Development and Approval Group is formed to provide this advice and guidance as described in Section 4.
- Course design and re-design should not take place in isolation from School Academic plans and the University's Business Planning
process.
- Cross-school and collaborative courses need to involve all partners in the planning process.
- The course must be designed with reference to internal and external reference points including University regulations, the
QAA's Quality Code and any PSRB requirements.
- Course design should focus on depth, coherence, and progression.
- The course sponsor should consider all aspects of the course at the design stage, including teaching, learning and assessment
strategies, awards and titles, admissions, careers, resources, and quality management and enhancement.
- Each course, or cluster of courses, should develop a Course Specification, providing succinct and accessible summaries of
key features of the course centred on its outcomes.
- Course Specifications are public documents and their primary intended audience is the student.
- Modules should be specified on the University's Module Specification Form.
- Comparable design requirements apply to Validated Centres (see Section 10 of the ASQ Handbook).
- Full details can be found in Section 3 of the ASQ Handbook.
