SPUR Project
2011 winner (2 of 20)
Children in the media from 1919 to 2009: binary comparisons of children 'at risk' and 'as' risk in British newspaper reporting
Supervisors: Dr Simon Cross (Communication, Culture and Media)
Student: Nick Wilson
The project examined a series of detailed, binary comparisons pertaining to how children and their welfare have been reported
in the British press with the aims of ascertaining the extent to which ‘risk’ frameworks dominate contemporary news representations
of children and childhood and whether these frames were equally evident in previous decades. The student collated information
from newspaper archives, and assisted with the analysis and reporting of the findings. The student also wrote an entry for
the media studies’ team’s blog, http://culturalstudiesatntu.blogspot.com/ and co-produced a study pack for use in the module ‘Theorizing and Researching Media and Culture.
