SPUR Project
2012 winner (2 of 14)
A social and health legacy of the 2012 Olympics: A qualitative study of community sport and physical activity in the East
Midlands Supervisors: Mr Chris Mackintosh (Education), Dr Natalie Darko (Education) and Zoe Rutherford (Science and Technology)
Olympic research legacy is a high profile and also increasingly contested policy domain. Announcement of considerable planned
investment in school, community and youth sport and physical activity for 2012-17 provides a further stimulus for this ethnographic
study which will explore the likely impact of London 2012 on Nottinghamshire communities in terms of the values, attitudes
and behaviours of young people and their families with relation to sports, volunteering, coaching and participation and whether
the Olympics impact on these in any way. It is intended that the project will contribute towards knowledge in the area of
sport policy more widely. Student tasks will include data collection including management of sports participation videos and
diaries, interviewing and observational research.
