The British Life of American Women’s Writing 1865 to 1918 Supervisor: Dr Stephanie Palmer (Arts and Humanities)
Scholars of women’s writing generally treat British and American women’s writing as separate traditions until after World
War I, and even many of the most basic connections between writers have gone undocumented, unremembered, or unanalysed. The
research will explore material evidence for different types of exchanges, including rivalries, misunderstandings, and reinterpretations
between American and British women writers. Student tasks will include searching various British publications for references
to American women’s writing generally and to some individual American women writers, also creating a NOW page of the findings
which will be used as a resource for future cohorts of students.
