SPUR Project
2012 winner (5 of 14)
Textiles/Fashion: Influencing Three Dimensional Manipulation & Transformation Supervisors: Dr Nigel Marshall (Art and Design) and Mrs Karen Harrigan (Art and Design)
Textile and fashion students predominantly work independently to each other and do not often collaborate in generating a fashion
outcome that considers how the textile characteristics can inform garment construction, or how garment can inform fabric construction.
The research intends to combine these two elements to identify inherent characteristics which enable free form garment construction
to take place, where textile and garment are co-dependent on informing the three dimensional form/outcome. The students –
one from Textile Design, one from Fashion Design – will generate a range of contextual and visual research. They will work
on fabric development, garment development and textile-fashion synthesis. To communicate a greater understanding of the synergies
between textiles and fashion, the project will focus on developing a specific free form garment to enable the combined characteristics
of fabric and garment to be demonstrated.
