'Orientalism Revisited' Supervisor: Prof Patrick Williams
2008 is the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Edward Said's Orientalism, one of the most influential (and frequently
controversial) books in literary and cultural studies – and other disciplines - of the late twentieth century. Routledge have
decided to mark this by including Orientalism in their 'Major Works' series which aims to provide substantial multi-volume
reference works offering a comprehensive overview of the chosen topic. Routledge invited Professor Patrick Williams to edit
the set on Orientalism. The production of the set on Orientalism provides an opportunity to re-assess not only Said's literally
epoch-making text but also the broad field of Orientalism in which it intervened so spectacularly. Student tasks included
online searching of databases (especially bibliographic) as well as research library catalogues, organisation and preparation
of appropriate bibliographies, research-related administrative tasks and publication-related tasks such as the production
of a publisher-usable copy of the selections generated by the database and bibliography tasks. The contribution of the student
to the research will be fully acknowledged within the published set.
