SPUR Project
2008 Winner (7 of 15)
Maria Graham Callcott: Travel Writing and Science in the Nineteenth Century – Archival Research Supervisors: Dr Betty Hagglund, Dr Carl Thompson (English)
The student project formed part of a two-year project based in the Centre for Travel Writing Studies in the Department of
English. Maria Graham Callcott was arguably the leading female travel writer of her day. In addition she made important contributions
to contemporary scientific debate, notably in the fields of art history and art theory. The student gained experience of ‘real’
research to enable them to develop a range of transferable skills to allow them to work as part of a research team and to
produce a range of outputs which will become part of the public face of the larger project.
