Welcome to NTU

Monday 24 September 2012

Introduction
Welcome to NTU takes place on the first Monday of Welcome Week (Monday 24 September 2012) and is designed to give students a definite starting point to their university experience. We use the Royal Concert Hall, the venue that students also graduate in, and in doing so celebrate both the start and end stage of their studies. Consisting of three shows, with three academic schools attending each show, student attendance time is dependant on which school they are studying with.

Each event will last one hour - below is the schedule for 2012

Time

School

10 am
  • School of Science and Technology
  • Nottingham Law School
  • School of Art & Design
12.15 pm
  • School of Arts and Humanities
  • School of Social Sciences
  • School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences
2.30 pm
  • Nottingham Business School
  • School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment
  • School of Education
4 pm
  • Postgraduate talk - aimed at postgraduate students (all schools)

Who is it for?
The first three events are aimed at new undergraduate students. The fourth event is intended to help build a postgraduate community. Direct entrants into later years are welcome to attend although it is unlikely that we'll have the information to directly invite them. If you are responsible for these students and would like them to attend, please contact Ed Foster to discuss arrangements.

Staff are welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity to have some messages read out at the end of each event. Contact Sarah Johnson to make arrangements for any messages.

Speakers
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Gorman personally welcomes students to the University and is joined on stage by:

  • the Dean or Associated Dean from the relevant schools
  • the President of the Students' Union
  • a representative from the Welcome Week team to talk about Welcome Week
  • a guest speaker (who is an NTU alumnus). In 2011 the guest speaker was Chris Townsend, Commercial Director of the London 2012 Olympic Games Organising Committee.

Previous guest speakers have included:

  • Paul Kenyon from the BBC's Panorama programme
  • Steve Dixon - Sky News presenter
  • Steve Trapmore - Olympic gold medalist (Rowing, Sydney 2000)
  • Louise Holland (2008 Alumnus of the year) - Local Fundraising Director for Cancer Research UK

Invitations
Students will be invited directly in their Welcome Week mailings, but please make sure that the correct time is included in the induction timetable. We would be grateful if you could also mention it in any communication you send out.

Transport arrangements
Coach and the Unilink transfers service will be arranged for Clifton and Brackenhurst students. Detailed transport arrangements are posted here during the summer, but in brief:

  • Clifton students are to use the Unilink service to travel into the city for Welcome to NTU. Students should be advised to check the Unilink timetable and leave plenty of time for their journey. Students will have to pay to catch the bus as the Unilink is not free on this day, however the service will run as a normal day instead.
  • Coach transfers from Brackenhurst - students are brought into the city by coach, and following their show have time spare to spend in the city and explore the city campus before coaches return to Brackenhurst.
