Skills sessions

You must attend four from the following range of skills-based workshops. These sessions will help develop your transferable skills. Additional sessions may be added throughout the year.

Please note that the following sessions are two hours long unless stated.

Aptitude / psychometric tests
There are five tests to choose from and all are promoted by SHL, global leader in talent management. Four tests are based on maths and verbal reasoning and one is a personality questionnaire which upon completion identifies what are your key strengths and weaknesses and what kind of jobs you are suitable for. 

Time management
This session examines how to avoid wasting time, prioritise work and set up an effective time management plan.

Numeracy (one hour)
Employers are increasingly using psychometric and numeracy tests as a part of the candidate selection process. This workshop is aimed at students who have already taken such tests, so they can practise and receive advice from a Maths mentor.

Entrepreneurship
This session outlines the skills, attitudes and attributes you will need to become a successful entrepreneur. You will be introduced to the creative thinking necessary to come up with potentially good business ideas. Even if you don't want to run your own business you will still learn valuable skills needed to become a wanted and entrepreneurial employee.

Oral communication (presentation skills)
This session will help you improve your planning and preparation for presentations in the workplace. It will also demonstrate how to use appropriate techniques and aids to improve audience understanding of the presentation topic.

Leadership
Here you will develop understanding of leadership and what is required of a practicing or potential first line manager. You will be shown how leadership theories and style can improve leadership practice.

Networking
This session introduces you to the personal skills needed for successful networking and how to use those skills in business and life.

Assertiveness
Here you will explore strategies for effectively dealing with people in the workplace. You will learn how to recognise and understand different behaviour types and develop strategies to deal with them appropriately.

Team working
This interactive workshop will teach you how to build and maintain teams in the workplace.You will be given advice on how to identify your role in a team and meet targets.

Writing for business
This workshop improves your ability to write important documents. It examines grammar basics through to explaining the
differing requirements for written publications.

Self awareness (one hour)
This workshop aims to help you identify your own strengths and weaknesses to improve personal development and work towards achieving career objectives.

University Language Programme (ULP)
If you are studying a language on the ULP in addition to your degree, this can be counted as one skills session towards your award. For further information visit the ULP webpage.

IT skills for the workplace
This session helps improve your professional IT skills and provides the latest knowledge on what IT skills employers now require.

Sustainability in the workplace
Learn about sustainability in the workplace in this interactive session shaped in a workshop setting.
