Mentee FAQs

How many mentees will my mentor have?
Mentors are expected to work with one mentee at a time.

Can I have more than one mentor?
Mentors are a valuable resource and there are never enough to service the demand, so you will only be allocated one mentor at a time.

What will my mentor do?
Your mentor will help you to develop your employability prospects. They will:

  • give sector insight to increase your knowledge and develop your commercial awareness
  • provide guidance, and where possible, opportunities to learn how to network
  • share their knowledge and experience of the sector's recruitment processes
  • share their experiences and advice on barriers you may face in the sector and how to overcome them
  • encourage and guide you to find out about the top 10 employers in the sector and the attributes, qualities and skills they are looking for.

What will be my time commitment?
Ideally, contact with your mentor needs to be every two weeks for around one hour to ensure a consistent and continuous exchange of dialogue to build the relationship, set goals and work towards accomplishing them. Contact outside of these meetings is expected via Skype, phone or email.

Where will I meet my mentee?

  • Mentoring sessions will take place at a location convenient for both parties
  • This could be on University premises or at a local venue such as a café, library or a place of work
  • Unless restricted by geographical location, mentors will be expected to meet face to face.

As a safeguarding precaution, mentoring should never take place at either the mentor's or mentee's home. The meeting places can be decided between you at the start of your relationship.

What if I have any problems with my mentee?
If problems develop in the relationship with your mentee, please contact the Mentoring Development Officer to discuss the issue, concerns or problem. We will work together to find a solution which will result in the best outcome for both parties.

Will I receive any training?
There is no mandatory training, but it is compulsory to attend an information workshop so you understand what you will need to do during the course of the mentoring relationship.

Your mentee guide book and resource pack should give you all the information you need, but if you have any further questions or require additional support please contact the Mentoring Development Officer.
