What is Employability Mentoring?
This programme is designed to improve our students employability prospects. The development of a mentoring relationship with an alumnus with a minimum of two years' professional experience working in the sector the student is aiming for will give them an insider’s view.
The programme is designed in a way which will:
- Encourages the student to begin to move self-sufficiently towards enhancing their employability prospects
- Creates the opportunity for them to begin building personal professional networks, gathering the skills necessary to become proficient networkers
- Allow the student to assess their employability and make an informed choice about the areas they need to develop
- Create a mentoring relationship with a focus dedicated to the need of the student.
Graduates who have participated in the Employability Mentoring Programme will have their all-important degree, but, in addition, they will have built themselves a reflective record of how they improved their employability prospects, highlighting the skills and attributes which were necessary to do so.
This programme is designed to fit the individual needs of the student. It offers them the opportunity to self-assess their employability, gain feedback and guidance from a professional with experience in the sector they are aiming for. It will also develop their ability to reflect on their learning, evaluate their progress and determine what they need to equip themselves with, in order to compete in today’s competitive job market.
New technologies give us the opportunity to network far and wide and enhance traditional face to face mentoring, allowing the initial working alliance to be developed between mentor and mentee. Relationships benefit from the use of e-mentoring adding to flexibility with much less restriction due to time and place constraints.
