Placements and work experience

Work experience is time spent in a work environment developing practical skills from your academic knowledge, something that employers are always looking for.

Placements and internship

Work placements are integral to many courses at NTU, normally lasting one academic year, often salaried. Internship is structured placement of any length, generally offered by organisations in areas such as the arts, accountancy, law and the media. Each School has dedicated placement officers.

Watch video presentations by two NTU students Laura Kirk and Kan-Ern, talking about their experiences whilst on placements with employers.

Work experience

Any work experience is beneficial, as it enables you to:

  • Learn more about organisations. For example, you will be able to compare large companies with small businesses in terms of culture and values.
  • Learn more about a particular type of work. You may well find that you do not want to enter into that field after all!
  • Make useful contacts. Employers often use work experience as an extended interview for graduate positions.
  • Develop new skills and knowledge. This is an essential part of enhancing your graduate employability after graduation.
  • Earn as you learn. It improves your life as a student!

We support the Shell STEP programme, an external organisation who provide structured work experience in small/medium companies for students and graduates.
