East Midlands Regional CETL Launch
Beyond the lecture theatre — showcasing teaching and learning in Higher Education in the East Midlands.
Cutting-edge teaching and learning methods in higher education are being harnessed creatively across the East Midlands to
inject excitement into learning.
The East Midlands network of Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) will showcase its ground-breaking work
at a special launch event taking place at The University of Nottingham on Thursday 1 June from 11am to 2pm.
The national Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) initiative aims to reward excellent teaching practice
in higher education institutions and to further invest in that practice to deliver substantial benefits to students, teachers and institutions. Funded with £315 million over five years from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, it represents the largest
ever single investment initiative in teaching and learning in higher education.
Nine of the CETLs in the East Midlands, which have received a total of £31 million in funding, have joined forces in a unique
partnership to share best practice and promote collaboration.
Nottingham Trent University had one successful CETL bid:
- The Centre for Effective Learning in Science is based in the University’s School of Science and Technology. It is unique among
the successful CETL bids as it focuses on developing teaching and student accessibility for all three traditional core sciences – chemistry, physics and biology – as well as the increasingly popular interdisciplinary subjects
such as sports science and forensic science. It aims to create a more relevant, accessible and achievable image for science
within both the higher education and school communities.
Around 150 guests, including CETL staff, industry partners, higher education organisations and business leaders from across
the region, will be welcomed to the launch at the East Midlands Conference Centre on University Park by the University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning Professor David Riley.
The Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University Professor Madeleine Atkins will deliver a keynote speech on The Underlying Philosophy and Purpose of the CETL Initiative, which will be followed by an address by Brian Jackson, Chairman of the East Midlands Development Agency on The Impact of CETLs on the East Midlands.
