University hosts regional science competition
School pupils were put to the test during a day of science experiments at Nottingham Trent University. Pupils from seven Midlands’
schools took part in the regional heat of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Schools’ Analyst Competition at the University’s
Clifton campus.
The competition, hosted by the University's Centre for Effective Learning in Science, involved using different analytical
methods to determine the amount of specific ingredients in soft drinks. It was eventually won by Loughborough Grammar School
which will now proceed to the national final at the University of East Anglia on 18 - 19 June.
The aim of the competition is to give pupils the chance to undertake practical experiments relevant to industrial and social
needs, using laboratory techniques used in higher education. Pupils were judged on skill, understanding and accuracy, and
were required to promote teamwork and safety in the laboratory.
