New CELS activities, funded by the East Midlands Excellence Hub Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the East Midlands Excellence Hub aims to provide a programme
of enrichment opportunities for gifted and talented young people across the region. The Hub, which is led by the University
of Nottingham with the Universities of Leicester and Loughborough as key partners, is working with other Higher Education
Institutions, such as Nottingham Trent University (NTU), to contribute to this programme.

Schools aim for water conservation School teams from across the East Midlands will soon discover details of their challenges in the Go4SET Water Conservation
Project, being announced at Nottingham Trent University. Eleven teams will represent the East Midlands in this national project,
which is part of the Engineering Development Trust’s STEM initiative. Go4SET is aimed at stimulating the interest of young
people in science, engineering and technology (SET) at a key stage in their education.

Funding for new activities CELS will be providing outreach activities through the East Midlands Excellence Hub. Places will be reserved for gifted and
talented and widening participation students. Activities are available for students at Key Stage 2 to Post 16. Activities
that will be on offer include minibeasts, rockets, data handling, physics for forensics and many more.

Green vehicles gearing up for National Chemistry Week A fleet of environmentally-friendly vehicles – including a bio-ethanol fuelled Lotus Elise and the world’s first hydrogen-fuelled
Formula Student racing car – will descend on Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton campus as part of this year’s National
Chemistry Week celebrations. The vehicles are part of the Fuelling the Future Tour which aims to support this year’s ‘travel’
theme set by event organisers The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

traditional core sciences (biology, chemistry and physics) as well as the newer interdisciplinary sciences (forensic and sports

‘Fuelling the Future’ National Tour As part of Chemistry Week 2007 the Royal Society of Chemistry is touring the country with ‘Fuelling the Future’ The tour consists
of a combination of exhibits, presentations and touring alternatively fuelled vehicles including a hydrogen fuelled Formula
Student racing car and a bio-ethanol fuelled Lotus Elise.

University courses to increase number of maths and science teachers New courses aimed at creating more maths, chemistry and physics school teachers are being launched at Nottingham Trent University.
The Secondary Subject Enhancement Courses will enable graduates to gain specific knowledge in these subject areas, along with
a Certificate in Mathematics or Chemistry or Physics, before embarking on a one-year Post Graduate Certificate in Education
(PGCE) qualification.

taking place on its Clifton campus. The visit, which included a number of presentations and a working lunch, culminated in
a tour round the recently opened, multi-million pound, Centre for Effective Learning in Science (CELS).

Art and science show to capture pupils' imagination - The Icarus Project An art and science performance event which aims to engage young people with the critical, moral and ethical issues of biomedical
science, is to be shown at Nottingham Trent University. Dragon Breath Theatre is to perform The Icarus Project as part of
the University’s celebration of National Science and Engineering Week 2007 (March 8-15).

New building development for CELS The construction of a new building for CELS has now been completed. The state of the art facilities include a school laboratory,
IT suite, lecture theatre and seminar rooms. The centre is to be formally opened at the end of March 2007.

Optical observatory development The development of a HEFCE funded observatory has now been completed. The 5 metre dome houses an 18-20" optical telescope
with full computer control.

Schools' Science and Engineering celebration event grows bigger This year’s Annual Celebration of Schools’ Science and Engineering in the East Midlands will be the biggest yet with a significantly greater number of students taking part than the previous
years. More than 180 of the region’s schools’ budding scientists, engineers and technologists will be displaying more than
80 exciting science and engineering projects to compete for prizes at the event.
