Special Topics in Molecular Biology - module development
Academic secondee: Sandra Kirk
Special Topics in Molecular Biology is a module taken by MSc Biomedical Sciences students at NTU; it is also offered as an
option on other programmes. A large number of the students enrolled on this module are from overseas and therefore have a
diverse range of educational backgrounds, and possess different skills and expectations.
The aim of this project was to produce materials to enhance the Special Topics in Molecular Biology module. This material
was designed to be accessible and take into account different learning styles and provide on-going feedback to fully engage
learners. As many users would be accessing the material remotely, it could not be assumed that students had access to laboratories.
Therefore a key objective of this e-learning module was the inclusion of alternative material, which offered a working knowledge
of key techniques in molecular biology.
Presentation given at NTU's Science Learning and Teaching Conference 2009: Learning at Masters level through Flexi Delivery.
