Academic secondments

Two teams have been created by seconded posts, these are the 'Teams for Integrated Projects across Science' (TIPS) and the 'Teams for Outreach Projects in Science' (TOPS).

The TIPS and TOPS are made up of academic staff from the School of Science and Technology. Seconded staff are released from their teaching activities on a temporary basis and during these release days are able work on their chosen research project. To date there have been three rounds of sabbaticals, resulting in 26 sabbatical projects so far. 

Round one sabbaticals include:

• Forensic physics: ballistics outreach project
• Modern assessment methods for large cohorts
• Formative assessment of large groups
• Chemistry pre-lab sessions
• Teaching large processes on small scales
• Protein purification e-learning project
• Practical skills in biological sciences

Round two sabbaticals include:

• Development of an eLearning postgraduate module for Research Methods and IT
• Learning, not teaching, programming (a new approach)
• Forensic Skills Development in Criminalistics Practical Work
• Computing and Technology Student Ambassador Scheme
• Ronnie and his skateboard
• Special Topics in Molecular Biology - module development
• Teaching the 'BIO' in Microbial BIOinformatics

Round three sabbaticals include:

• Development of Cell Culture and Antibody Technology module (level 4)
• Bioscience outreach programme
• Creating an accessible learning environment in the School of Science and Technology
