Pi (π) and pi* (π*) molecular orbital formation via the interaction of p-orbitals

The lateral (side-on) interaction of in-phase p-orbitals (either two px, two py, or one px + one py) results in the formation of a bonding molecular orbital (π M.O.).

The lateral interaction of out-of-phase p-orbitals results in the formation of an antibonding molecular orbital (π*). M.O. formation (antibonding M.O.).

Again the nodal plane area has electron probability of zero.

The π M.O. does experience a change in phase when rotated about its internuclear axis.
