Graduate profile
Jacqui Gilmour - Veterinary Surgeon
Job title and description Veterinary Surgeon. I work with all species of animal, from hamsters to cows.
What degree did you study? Veterinary Science (a Bachelor's Degree) at Bristol University.
What are your main duties of work? My time in the surgery is spent consulting (usually a 2 hour block of appointments, seeing dogs, cats, rabbits etc. for a
health check or treatment if they're ill) or operating (routine procedures like neutering and other more challenging surgeries
such as fixing broken legs). I also have to make time for paperwork and telephoning clients. When I'm not in the surgery I
go to farms to treat sick cows, sheep and pigs. I also visit stables to treat injured or sick horses.
What are your favourite aspects of the job? I love the variety, no day is the same as the next. It’s also very satisfying when I successfully treat really ill animals.
I enjoy getting out and about visiting the farms and stables; it breaks up the day and it is great to get some sun in the Summer!
What kind of salary can a graduate expect to earn in this job? A new graduate can earn between £24,000 - £30,000, an experienced assistant can earn between £30,000 - £45,000 and practice
partners and specialists can earn £50,000+ per year.
How has your degree helped you? You have to have a Veterinary degree recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in order to practice in the UK.
My degree was essential, you cannot be a Vet without it.
