The interactive presentation will set the scene of the crime and introduce the suspects. It will also outline each technique as we progress through the evidence.
Hands-on experiments
Pupils will be asked to take part in activities throughout the talk to explore the evidence. They will be encouraged to work in groups at their tables with plenty of jobs for each pupil.
Learning outcomes
Pupils will investigate basic forensic techniques to piece together a crime. They will develop an understanding of how we need a combination of facts to solve the crime. This activity is designed as an enrichment activity rather than an activity directly linked to the curriculum.
Target age range - Years Three to Six
Group size - One school class (25 to 30 children) divided into six groups
Length of activity - Approximately one hour
Safety - Most of the materials used can be bought ‘off-the-shelf’ and pose no health risk.
Equipment - All equipment is provided by the visiting scientists apart from pens and pencils. The pupils will be asked to fill in an accompanying activity sheet as the session progresses.
Classroom set-up -The room should be set up for up to six groups of equal sizes with room for movement around the tables. Use of an interactive whiteboard or computer and projector is required.
