Image of M101 taken by the NTU telescope

M101
This image, which is a 28.5 minute exposure without a filter, was taken with the 0.5m NTU telescope on the 8 May 2009. It shows a spiral galaxy also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, which is 27 million light years away. Our Galaxy is also a spiral galaxy and would look similar to M101 when viewed from the top.

The spirals contain young stars, gas and lots of dust. You may spot the thin lanes of dust inside the spirals.
