Image from the NTU telescope

Image of spiral galaxy

This picture shows a spiral galaxy, known as NGC 5907, which is 40 million light years away.

The image was taken by Nourédine Rassoul, a 2nd year student from IUT Clermont-Ferrand in France. The galaxy was photographed on 1 June, 2009 with the 0.5m telescope at NTU. It is a combination of 5 reduced pictures using a green (or V) filter. The combined exposure time is 7.5 minutes.

As this galaxy is viewed from the side its spiral arms are not visible, because of this the galaxy resembles a large line. Its bright centre is known as the galactic bulge.
