Open Dome Events - ongoing on a monthly basis Interested colleagues and members of the general public have been welcomed to the NTU observatory to experience the fascinating
world of astronomy. Each event has focused on a different topic and included a tour of the observatory and, weather permitting,
the chance to observe the sky using the telescope, solar scope and binoculars. To find out more about previous Open Dome Events,

Animal Extravaganza - January 2008 This event began with a look at the existence of mutant animals in the wild and how science can be used to explain their occurrence.
Following this, pupils were introduced to a variety of exotic animals and will learn about their natural habitats and how
these have been affected by human behaviour.

Science inspiring Art: DNA through Sculpture - December 2007 This inspiring exhibition offered an interpretion of DNA and its meaning in our lives and culture through the medium of sculpture.

Newark and Nottinghamshire show - 2007, 2006 The CELS team took part in the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show. Members of the public were invited to find out more
about CELS and the outreach activities on offer, whilst the younger members of the family had a go at slime making and our
interactive quiz.

CELS official opening event - March 2007 The launch of the Centre for Effective Learning in Science (CELS), was attended by Dr Adam Hart-Davis who officially opened
the venue. The event included interactive displays, demonstrations and a tour of the CELS facilities.

DNA Master class - March 2007 During this practical master class, students extracted DNA from cheek cells and had the opportunity to practice some of the
techniques used in genetic fingerprinting.

The Icarus Project - March 2007 Further to the resounding success of Dragon Breath (2004) and Reaching for the Moon (2005), Dragon Breath Theatre presented
The Icarus Project. This was an art and science performance event, fusing traditional and contemporary technologies to engage
young people with the moral and ethical issues of biomedical science.

Physics fun day - 2008, 2007 This fun day of physics allowed children to explore topics related to the curriculum through hands on activities. The session includeed
light and sound, circuits and forces with a demonstration lecture about what happens when things get really cold!

Science of ice cream - February 2007 This interactive lecture concluded with a spectacular demonstration of ice cream making using liquid nitrogen.

Science of chocolate - December 2006 What makes chocolate so chocolatey? This was a great opportunity to find out more. Students were introduced to the science
and technology behind chocolate production.

The Science of Beer - October 2006 Strictly for grown-ups! A chance to find out about the science and history of brewing beer. There were also free samples for the audience to take
home. Our guest speaker provided a fascinating insight into the history of the Nottingham Brewery and took a brief look at
the science of beer.

CPD event - Forensic Science - May 2006 This CPD event for science teachers allowed participants to to take on the roles of a Crime Scene Examiner and a Forensic
Scientist. The session will included processing a crime scene, collecting evidence and examining fingerprints, footprints
and tool marks.

Sci-Kick - February, March 2006 Students were invited to informal discussions about the latest scientific research and developments. Discussion topics included
"Can we grow human tissue in a laboratory?" and "Shaking Sand".

SciTec 2007 - 2007, 2006 With an action packed schedule of fascinating shows, interactive exhibitions and hands on activities, primary school students
got to explore science in a fun and exciting environment.
