Shadowing scheme
A day in the life – your opportunity to shadow a university lecturer
- How much do you know about the nature of teaching and learning your students will experience when they progress to higher education?
- How can you better equip your students to make a successful transition to university?
- Would you be interested in updating your knowledge of the latest academic research and degree content in your subject area?
Come to NTU and find out for yourself! We are inviting teachers and lecturers from our partner schools and colleges to take part in our shadowing scheme.
How does the scheme work?
- Sept-Dec*: We accept application forms from new post-16 teachers who would like to join the shadowing scheme. We process your application form and try and find a suitable university lecturer. Once a university lecturer has been identified, we introduce you to them via email and ask you to liaise with each other to find a suitable time during Jan-March to shadow each other.
- Jan-Mar*: The post-16 teacher will visit the University to shadow the academic / lecturer for a day. The university lecturer can also, if required, spend one day in a college or school shadowing a post-16 teacher on a programme relevant to their discipline.
- Mar-July*: When shadowing has been completed we ask the post-16 teacher to fill in a short form for monitoring purposes
*Please note that we endeavour to match you with the most appropriate person within the above schedule, however due to limited resources it may sometimes take longer or not be possible.
How does the scheme benefit schools and colleges?
This CPD opportunity will give teachers an insight into university-level research, curriculum and teaching methods in their subject area. Teachers will gain resources, examples and experiences they can use to enrich their own teaching. The scheme will provide opportunities for schools and colleges to develop more productive links with the University and enable teachers to better support their students in the transition from further to higher education.
How will it benefit the University?
The aim is for our University staff to achieve a greater understanding of the level of academic competencies and experiences of pre-higher education entry students. The opportunity to observe the types of learning, teaching and assessment students engage with immediately prior to entering the first year of university may influence the approach to induction, first assignments and feedback. It will also help inform the University's provision of support for students in their transition to higher education.
How do I get involved?
You can email to register your interest in the scheme or download and complete the application form
. Please return the attached form to us by email. We will liaise with our University colleagues to provide a suitable shadowing opportunity. We will reimburse reasonable travel and out of pocket expenses and have a fund available to support supply cover where needed.
