Work experience placements at Nottingham Trent University

We currently have the following placements available:

  • Astronomy and Science Outreach Assistant
    Opportunities are available for pupils to carry out activities linked to academic courses such as astronomy, biosciences or forensic science. Students could expect to gain experience in working in the Observatory and taking part in observation, analysing astronomical date and undertaking lab work, designing practical astronomy and science activities for use in schools, organising and presenting activities to school groups, preparation of equipment and materials and administrative and lab based work.
  • Business Law and Social Sciences Administrative Assistant
    During a placement in the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences (BLSS) the student will provide administrative support to a team within the College; this may include some or all of the following: reception duties, filing, data entry, photo copying, diary management, general clerical and admin duties, telephone enquiries and incoming mail delivery. The object is to offer those interested in a career in Higher Education Administration an insight into what that involves.
  • Bonington Shop Assistant
    Students will be assisting in general tasks in the art shop, re-stocking and pricing goods, bagging items and general housekeeping tasks.
  • CPLD Clerical Assistant
    During a placement with the Centre for Professional Learning and Development (CPLD), students will co-ordinate the provision of national vocational qualifications within NTU, develop resources for use in training events, prepare materials and evaluate the effectiveness of activities and events. They will also experience working in an office environment and dealing with administrative tasks as part of an enthusiastic team, along with working on tasks independently using Microsoft Office packages and bespoke software installed within the university IT systems.
  • Education Support Administrator
    During a placement with the School of Education a student can expect to gain experience in meetings, customer service, maintaining student records, individual projects and working with students and colleagues delivering administrative support.
  • Environmental Team Assistant
    During a placement with the Environment Team students will be meeting NTU staff and students to discuss environmental issues, helping to deliver activities on the NTU campuses and evaluating the effectiveness of activities and events. Students will work in an office environment and deal with administrative tasks within an enthusiastic team and have experience of working on tasks independently using Microsoft Office software.
  • Estates and Resources Construction Quality Management Assistant
    During a placement with the Quality Management Team students can expect to learn about some of the statutory requirements and standards for construction management and design, gain an overview of health and safety requirements that relate to the Estates Department including the management of asbestos containing materials, undertake a supervised site visit(s) to observe current refurbishment and/or construction project(s), observe building energy management systems and fire detection systems and spend time with the Computer Aided Design (CAD) team to experience the drafting and design process for office and teaching area refurbishments.

  • Fashion Design Student
    This is an exciting opportunity to experience life as a fashion design student at NTU. You will be included into the 1st and 2nd year cohort where you will select three design briefs ranging from womenswear, menswear and accessories and one 3D brief. You will produce a portfolio of work that will give you a strong understanding of the design process from concept to product.
    (available October and February only)
  • Fashion, Textiles and Knit Technician
    You will be working as part of the technical team assisting with a variety of duties associated with the busy Fashion, Textile and Knit Subject Area. You will gain a good understanding of how the technical team support the various teaching activities and how they maintain the various resource facilities.
  • Information Systems IT Assistant
    During a placement in Information Systems (IS) students could expect to gain experience in desktop IT, AV and telephone support, computer networking and Web design and delivery, print shop and software licensing, server, database and general administration, user helpdesk and customer liaison, programme and project management and systems development.
  • Library Assistant
    The student will receive an overview of the work of an academic library. Routine administrative tasks will be undertaken and there will be an opportunity to talk to senior staff who will describe their roles within Libraries and Learning Resources.
  • Placement Office Administrative Assistant
    Student working in the Placement Office will be able to experience what it is like behind the scenes helping university students to find placements as part of their degree. The student will be attending meetings, circulating agendas and note taking, developing resources for use by students and preparing materials. They will also be able to see CV and application advice given to students, liaise with employers re placements and arrange and shadow at meetings with students to give employment and application advice for their placements.
  • Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach Administration and Events Assistant
    During a placement with Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach (SCCO) students could expect to work as part of a busy team working with students of all ages to help develop their understanding of university. They could be developing resources for use in schools, preparing materials for events and supporting colleagues delivering events to students in schools and on the NTU campuses. There will also be an element of administrative work and individual projects including developing an individual presentation.
  • Sport and Lifestyle Assistant
    During a placement with the Nottingham Trent University Sport and Lifestyle Department students can expect to gain experience working in the sports facilities at both the City site and Clifton campus, assisting with bookings and events, set-up of sports equipment and managing the reception point. Student will also shadow the duty managers and the sports development office and have an opportunity to learn more about how the British Universities Colleges Sports (BUCS) fixtures work.
  • Student Support Services Administrative Assistant
    During a placement with Student Support Services (SSS) students could expect to gain experience in developing resources for students, preparing materials, making arrangements and ordering resources for activities and events, helping to deliver activities to students on campus and administrative work including filing, scanning, maintaining equipment and archiving.
  • Textiles Technician
    Working alongside the technical support team within the Textiles department, you will be supporting students in the areas of screen printing, embroidery, weave and knit. This will involve preparing materials for classes. In addition there is also the opportunity to work alongside gallery/support staff installing graduate shows at certain times of the year (typically May/June/July)
  • Workshop Technician
    Opportunities exist for pupils to carry out project-based activities related to processes linked to academic courses including, product design, computer-aided design packages, rapid prototyping, use of laser technology, electronic and robotics, manufacturing processes, construction-related science applications and use of instruments to take surveying measurements and architectural modelling.

  • *NEW* Catering - Kitchen Assistant
    Students will be actively involved in the production of food for students, staff, visitors and conference delegates. They will be working in all sections of the kitchen to enhance skills and gain knowledge of the daily operation in a diverse and busy kitchen establishment, including health and safety, food safety and hygiene procedures.
  • *NEW* Catering – Retail Outlet Assistant

  • *NEW* Economics Assistant
    Students will have the opportunity to work on a research project that fits with their personal interest and curriculum needs, within the field of Economics of the European Union. This may involve online information gathering, directed reading, use of the university library and compiling relevant materials. The student will be supported by the Professor of European Economics and Policy, and through discussion and possible attendance at lectures (subject to availability) will develop a research project which can be used to further their interest in this area, and support their research for HE. Students will develop an understanding of real world economic issues and develop their independent learning skills – so they must be able to use their initiative and be self-motivated.

  • *NEW* Equestrian Centre Technician
    Students will be assisting in the day to day running of the Equestrian Unit to gain an understanding of the role and responsibilities of an Equine Technician. The principal duties and responsibilities include mucking out, grooming, tacking up, rugging up, tack cleaning, filling hay nets and feeding and all other related yard activities under direct supervision of the Yard Manager or a delegated full time Equine Technician. Students will also be able to shadow the Yard Manager or delegated Equine Technician in their daily work to observe their role and responsibilities.

  • *NEW* Marketing Administrator
    Students will have responsibility for the development, organisation and provision of administrative functions, working with a wide range of staff within the Network for Languages Team. The student will liaise with external stakeholders and internal staff to book car parking and IT provision, organise purchasing, take event bookings and create signing in sheets, feedback forms and handouts, and help prepare for events. They will also update internal software with contacts and marketing activities, and act as the first point of contact for enquiries related to the project. There may also be the opportunity to manage web presence, ensure the project website is kept up-to-date with news and events, and create eBulletins for distribution.
  • *NEW* Modern Foreign Languages
    The Eurostars Language Event is for post-16 students who are currently studying a language at AS level. The two day event (July 2013) will include interactive workshops and taster sessions for students to improve their language skills, have the chance to try out a new language and experience university life. We are recruiting for a one week placement in July 2013 for a student to assist with the preparation for Eurostars, and to help out over the event. The student will assist with admin tasks in preparation for the event, such as photocopying, preparing registers, making up goodie bags and arranging signage. During the event the student will help with the logistics of running a busy event, and will be able to get involved in the workshops and tasters. This is a fantastic opportunity to see what it’s like to study a language at university, and the workings behind organising such an exciting event.
  • *NEW* Nottingham Language Centre
    During a placement with Network for Languages East Midlands and the School of Arts and Humanities students will be attending project planning meetings, developing resources for use for schools at all levels (primary through to post 16), preparing materials, making arrangements and ordering resources for activities and events. They will also help to coordinate activities on the NTU campuses, work on international projects and with student focus groups related to research on intercultural communications in Europe or to the school’s international partnerships and enhancing the international experience for students.
  • *NEW* Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing

  • *NEW* Print Shop
    Students will be working in the Print Shop within Information Systems and will have the opportunity to operate printing and other related equipment to provide monochrome and colour printing, copying, collating, binding, and laminating. They may also be collecting payments from students/public and will gain customer service experience. (Available May only)
  • *NEW* Science Research Assistant
    Students will be able to carry out activities and small projects that can be linked to research in the areas of astronomy, forensics and general physic. Students may be working in a laboratory environment, gathering data, analysing scientific data and undertaking lab work, attending lectures on astronomy and science, working in an office environment and dealing with administrative tasks. It may also be possible to arrange some time supporting the work of the Physics and Mathematics team, but this will be dependent on the staff availability. (Post 16 students only)
  • *NEW* Sports Science – Biomechanics
    This is an opportunity for students to get practical, hands-on experience of applied sports science in the field of Biomechanics. The student will be involved with activities such as capturing still images related to Biomechanics, 2-D and 3-D analysis of movement, measurement of forces, isokinetic and isometric assessment of muscular strength, IT and written tasks involving production of teaching materials relating to student laboratories. (Post 16 students only, available during the summer)

The following placements are now for full for 2012 / 13 academic year

  • Forensic Assistant
    Students will have the opportunity to carry out activities linked to Forensic Science and Crime Scene Investigation. This may involve working in the Crime Scene Training Facility and taking part in the preparation of simulated crime scenes, undertaking a digital photography and imaging project, attending lectures on Forensic Science, preparing equipment and materials for Forensic activities and events and working in a Forensic Science laboratory environment.
