Leadership and Management at NTU
Choosing the Right Management or Leadership Development Pathway
The appropriate development pathway for Managers and Leaders is dependent on the job role level.
Job role is defined by the four levels of achievement, split over the nine behavioural competencies, set out in the NTU Competency Framework
. The roles are as follows:
| Role Level 1 | Personal Performer | No management responsibility. |
|---|---|---|
| Role Level 2 | First Line Manager | Manager of personal performers. |
| Role Level 3 | Middle Manager | Manager of managers, involved in writing and forming NTU Strategy and Policy. |
| Role Level 4 | Strategic Manager | Head of service, Dean. |
Management development opportunities at NTU are for all those in or aspiring to First Line Management positions.
Leadership Development at NTU (LDN) is a development framework for those currently working at Middle Manager level. Within the context of NTU a Middle Manager will be the manager of a functional team at Grade H-J, Course Leaders, Academic Team Leaders or equivalent.
If you are still unsure of the best development pathway for you, please contact CPLDEnquires@ntu.ac.uk for further advice.

The programme is delivered as a total of 25 modules. These are split into 14 ‘Core’ and 11 ‘Optional’. To give you the knowledge and skills to be effective in your management role it is recommended that the core modules should be completed within 6 months of starting in post and the remaining 11 optional modules should be completed within 2 years of appointment. To successfully complete the programme participants will need to attend/complete 14 core and 5 of the optional modules, in addition a reflective journal will need to be submitted for each module plus a summative review.

To complete the programme participants will need to complete a minimum of 15 hours of development across the three modes of learning (i.e. tutor-led, self-directed, AIMS). The 15 hours will incorporate at least one unit from each of the three modes, i.e. at least one tutor-led session, one AIMS and one self-directed learning unit. Evidence of the 15 hours will be provided in the form of a Reflective Journal for each tutor-led session, an Action Plan for each AIMS attended and a Guided Learning Hours (GLH) Record for self-directed study units.

Competency Development Tool
There is not a natural progression from Management Development to Leadership Development. This is in part as the development pathway for Managers and Leaders is dependent on job role level.
Those who have recently completed the Management Development Programme, and are not yet in a Middle Management position, may wish to refer to the Competency Development Tool along the tabs at the top of this page. There you will find further suggestions for activities to develop competencies that are required for your job, or for your own personal progression.
We recommend that you liaise with your line-manager when selecting activities and recognise your participation through the PDCR process as a record of your development.
