Management and Leadership Development Pathways

Managers can take part in individual modules to address specific development needs or opt to complete a programme that results in:

  • ILM recognised Management Development Programme (all job role levels)
  • ILM recognised Leadership Development Programme (job role levels 3 and above)
  • ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management Skills (job role levels 3 and above)

Management Development Programme

The Management Development Programme is a structured programme, recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), introducing the management role for all those in or aspiring to First Line Management positions. The programme is delivered as a total of 25 modules. These are split into 14 ‘Core’ and 11 ‘Optional’. To give you the knowledge and skills to be effective in your management role it is recommended that the core modules should be completed within 6 months of starting in post and the remaining 11 optional modules should be completed within 2 years of appointment. To successfully complete the programme participants will need to attend/complete 14 core and 5 of the optional modules, in addition a reflective journal will need to be submitted for each module plus a summative review.

Leadership Development Programme

The Leadership Development Programme is a structured programme, recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM), for those currently working at Middle Manager level. To complete the programme participants will need to complete a minimum of 15 hours of development across the three modes of learning (i.e. tutor-led, self-directed, AIMS). The 15 hours will incorporate at least one unit from each of the three modes, i.e. at least one tutor-led session, one AIMS and one self-directed learning unit. Evidence of the 15 hours will be provided in the form of a Reflective Journal for each tutor-led session, an Action Plan for each AIMS attended and a Guided Learning Hours (GLH) Record for self-directed study units.

ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management Skills

  1. The ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management Skills is a qualification for those currently working at Middle Manager level. It comprises two mandatory units:
Understanding the management role to improve management performance.
  2. Assessing your own leadership capability and performance.

Each unit requires 15 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). In addition to the 30 GLH candidates will be required to complete an Assignment Task for each unit, as well as the Reflective Review, Action Plan or Guided Learning Hours Record required as part of participation on the Leadership Development at NTU modules. A GLH Record will be required for all self-directed activity including pre-workshop reading.

In order to achieve the 30 GLH candidates would be required to undertake the following scheme of work:

Competency Development Tool

There is not a natural progression from Management Development to Leadership Development. This is in part as the development pathway for Managers and Leaders is dependent on job role level.

Those who have recently completed the Management Development Programme, and are not yet in a Middle Management position, may wish to refer to the Competency Development Tool along the tabs at the top of this page. There you will find further suggestions for activities to develop competencies that are required for your job, or for your own personal progression.

We recommend that you liaise with your line-manager when selecting activities and recognise your participation through the PDCR process as a record of your development.
