The NTU Learning and Teaching Professional Development Framework
At NTU, we are committed to ensuring that if you are someone who teaches and/or supports learning, you can access a range of opportunities to help develop your professional practice. We are also keen to ensure that you can gain professional recognition of your practice where appropriate.
Nottingham Trent University's Professional Development Framework for Learning and Teaching has been developed following extensive consultation across NTU with Colleges, Schools, Professional Services and Unions via the Employee Information and Consultation Forum (EICF). It provides a set of tools which can be used to support you in your learning and teaching practice, support your professional development and to provide externally recognised accreditation for your achievements. The Frameworks has been created using national standards for teaching supporting learning in HE (UKPSF).
The Framework includes:
- A definition of different phases of learning and teaching professional development and professional recognition spanning a full career, and how these typically relate to different staff roles at NTU
- A new policy relevant to all staff who teach and support learning at NTU with important changes about new staff and the PGCHE

- An NTU Learning and Teaching Tool which maps a range of learning and teaching professional development opportunities against different phases of development. This will be updated to reflect any new opportunities that become available:
How will this affect you?
The Centre for Professional Learning and Development are using the Framework to work with Schools and Professional Services to:
- inform the design, planning, delivery and accreditation of professional development activities delivered at NTU, including any of our teaching and academic practice qualifications – to ensure we have appropriate opportunities available
- implement the new NTU Learning and Teaching Professional Development Policy
- run a Professional Recognition Scheme where colleagues who can demonstrate they have reached the appropriate level within the Framework can also be awarded professional recognition, accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
Academic staff in schools
In line with priorities in the new policy, arrangements are being made to enable all academic colleagues to review their learning and teaching professional development by the end of January 2013 to identify how many colleagues will be applying for professional recognition by the 31 July 2015. All academic staff (including Hourly-Paid Lecturers) will receive further information from their Academic Team Leader (ATL) shortly about this data-gathering exercise.
Further information can be found in guides 8 and 9 for School Executive carrying out the data exercise.
Research, technical and professional services staff
It is envisaged that any of these staff who teach and/or support learning will use the Framework from the June 2013 PDCR onwards to assist with their professional development planning.
Postgraduate research students
Those who are preparing to teach, or currently teach, will be provided with further information via the Graduate School about learning and teaching professional development opportunities available to them, including how they can work towards NTU Level one Professional Recognition.
Further information on learning and teaching professional development opportunities please see our learning and teaching page.
