Teaching and supporting learning

Here you will find a list of professional development courses specifically for anyone who teaches and / or supports learning, whether you are in an academic, professional services or technical role.

  • An Introduction to Academic Policy and Practice at NTU – a very short professional development programme designed specifically for colleagues who teach and / or support the learning of undergraduate and postgraduate students, and new to NTU colleagues in particular. For any level of prior experience or expertise in teaching and supporting learning in HE. Creates part of overall induction and orientation to NTU for new academic staff. Available from March 2013.
  • The NTU Initial Teaching Professional Development Programme replaces the Essential Teaching Tool-Kit (ETT) course. It provides a practical, modular professional development course for early career practitioners working towards NTU Level 1 professional recognition (HEA Associate Fellow). Particularly suitable for Hourly-Paid Lecturers (including postgraduate research students) new to teaching and supporting learning in HE, and technical staff who support teaching and learning, but do not engage in the full range of teaching and assessment activities. Available from May 2013.
  • The NTU Academic Practice Professional Development Programme replaces the Introduction to Learning and Teaching course (ILTHE). It provides a modular, flexible blended professional development course for early career practitioners developing the foundations of their practice and working towards NTU Level 2 professional recognition (HEA Fellow). Particularly suitable for academic staff within their first three years of teaching and supporting learning in HE, and more experienced colleagues seeking to develop particular aspects of their practice. Available from March 2013. Further information December 2012.
  • The NTU Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (NTU PGCHE) provides a structured, validated professional development course for experienced and new staff who seek to gain a postgraduate teaching qualification (worth 60 ‘M’ level credits / Level 7) in addition to applying for their NTU Level 2 professional recognition (HEA professional recognition). Open to staff from other organisations as well as NTU staff. A number of NTU-funded places available each year – for details of the application process and criteria contact School of Education.

Course Leader development programme

A series of individual workshops and briefing sessions for course leaders at NTU, new or experienced.
