There is a range of development to support Professional Services staff which includes the following:

  • First Line Managers Development Programme PDF icon . Modules within this programme can be attended individually for personal development in a specific area or as part of the programme.
  • support and development for colleagues for professional practice aligned with the NTU Competency Framework
  • the introduction to and application of Human Resources policies
  • the delivery and facilitation of bespoke events, as requested.

This service is relevant to all Professional Services colleagues.

What informs our approach to professional development in this area?
We aim to offer a mix of structured programmes planned over a 12-month period with a responsive service to accommodate needs that arise during that time. The NTU Learning and Development Strategy links to strategic initiatives and informs the content of the plan. We are also led by the latest thinking from awarding bodies such as the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and professional Institutes like the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.

What types of activity do we deliver or support in this area of work?
The activities covered include the following:

  • recognised programmes through the Institute of Leadership and Management
  • tutor-led workshops varying in length from two to six hours
  • the facilitation of bespoke events (for example, team-building, time-management)
  • training needs analysis.

Who delivers or facilitates the service?
The Centre for Professional Learning and Development works in collaboration with NTU colleagues and external providers.

What are our flagship offerings in this area?
We offer a comprehensive programme of interpersonal skills development contributing to effective and efficient practice in the workplace. The competency framework is supported by a range of resources for all competencies at all levels. To assist your learning a Competency Development Tool has been designed to offer you suggestions for activities to develop competencies that are required for your job, or for your own personal progression.

Our bespoke events are tailored to meet the needs of departments, teams and individuals.

What bespoke work are we doing in this area?
We are working on a long-term development programme for staff within Information Systems, which covers support for Team Leaders and the development of Coaching and Mentoring skills within the team. We also deliver various events for teams around the University, as requested.
