What do I need to know when inducting new colleagues who teach and / or support learning?
New staff and teaching qualifications / professional recognition
- From 1 September 2012, new academic staff they are no longer required to complete a PGCHE within two years of starting at NTU.
- Instead, they will be required to attain professional recognition of their practice at a level appropriate to their role within three years of appointment; for lecturers/ senior lecturers and principal lecturers, the minimum requirement is for Level Two recognition (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy).
- Other staff who teach and/or support learning (eg Hourly-Paid Lecturers and Professional Services staff) are also expected to participate in professional development appropriate to their role.
- As part of induction and probation of new staff who do not already hold any required level of professional recognition, line managers will need to discuss and agree timescales for this to be attained at an appropriate time during their first three years at NTU, and monitor progress via PDCR. Further information is contained within the Learning and Teaching Policy Guide
. - Use the NTU Learning and Teaching Professional Development Framework to help you identify and plan your own professional development as well as support other colleagues professional development planning. CPLD are working with colleagues in School Executives to plan an initial data gathering exercise to support implementation of the new policy and framework. The following guides provide resources to help Schools plan that exercise.
- Guide Eight: Interim PDCR Manager's Guide
- Guide Eight appendix: Professional Recognition form
- Guide Nine: Recording Teaching Qualifications
- The resources on the induction pages contain checklists you can use/adapt when planning an induction programme. These include a checklist of essentials for all staff, and one of additional items for new academic staff.
