Clifton campus: an inspiring and innovative place to be

Nottingham Trent University's commitment to providing an inspiring teaching, learning and research environment for staff and students, as well as providing an excellent student experience has resulted in the regeneration of the Clifton campus.

The regeneration plans will significantly enhance the reputation of NTU for innovation and sustainability and will help create a working environment that inspires a culture of ambition and community.

Now open! New multi-use laboratory: The Rosalind Franklin building (formerly known as Superlab)

The former Toyota building has been turned into a fantastic multi-use laboratory, creating a new teaching and research capability at the University for both staff and students.

The high-specification multi-use centre allows up to 200 students to work simultaneously and provides some of the UK’s finest laboratory facilities for Chemistry and Biosciences. It encourages collaborative work between different sciences and provides a multimedia rich environment to support excellent teaching, training and learning. Internationally renowned research will also be housed in the building.

Graduate School

In support of the growing, vibrant community of research and research students on the campus there will also be a single Graduate School within the CELS building.

Computing and Informatics and George Eliot Buildings

The optimisation of the Clifton campus estate is also very high on the agenda. The Computing and Informatics building will become the principal focus of General Purpose Teaching rooms and General Purpose IT accommodation on the campus. To improve it even further the University will also demolish the older and less efficient accommodation, including the George Eliot building.

New ‘Heart of the Campus’

A new focal ‘Heart of the Campus’ is being planned which will provide first class, sustainable, social and learning facilities in a central location. The space will benefit from innovative IT facilities, including wireless internet access both inside and out. Private, quiet study spaces will be provided, as well as a safe secure environment with extended opening hours.

Expected completion date: Christmas 2015.

Students’ Village

The concept of ‘Villages’ has been adopted including the ‘Students’ Village’ and the ‘Sports Village’. Within the Students’ Village, and as part of the multi-million pound development to improve the student experience, a series of vibrant and sustainable new residences have been built. The social space, The Point, has also been completely refurbished.

The student residences provide a total of over 700 modern, functional and comfortable bedrooms, grouped around spacious and stylish kitchens and living areas – dramatically enhancing the living environment for students. Wireless internet access will also be available from September 2012.

The residences are also the site for our ambitious solar panel installation, which is one of the largest in the UK. A total of 132 solar panels have been installed, providing 33,000 litres of hot water each day and saving 61 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The students’ social venue, The Point, has been completely refurbished. Capacity has almost doubled, with two dance floors providing variety and flexibility.

The Benenson building has also been refurbished and reconfigured.

Sports Village

Exceptional sport and fitness facilities are available for amateur enthusiasts and aspiring Olympians alike.

£5 million has been invested over the last three years, including in the development of the Lee Westwood Sports Centre and, more recently, a new blue artificial turf hockey pitch. The pitch has been installed to provide a performance very similar to that of the London 2012 Olympics pitches and NTU is one of just two universities to boast this resource. Other developments include four new tennis courts, also in blue, and further redevelopment is being planned.
