Environment

Nottingham Trent University is in the top five amongst UK universities in the People and Planet Green League. This is testament to how important we believe our environmental policy is in reducing waste and reducing our carbon footprint. We need your help to keep ahead of the game at reducing our impact on the environment.

What is the university doing?

All our activities are spearheaded by the EcoCampus scheme. We are running a range of initiatives with a particular focus on reducing our carbon footprint from our buildings, our vehicles, and reducing and recycling waste. Our resource room PCs are now programmed to power down automatically when not in use, and we are committed to ethical investments and purchasing policies.

From October 2009 all of the University's electrical requirements will be met from renewable sources including biomass, on-shore and off-shore wind generation. Visit Ecoweb for more information.

Newton Arkwright development

The development team have worked extremely hard to improve the environmental performance of Newton and Arkwright, which were not originally built with energy efficiency in mind. As they are listed buildings we have to retain many of the original features, including the draughty windows. So, we have installed secondary glazing in Newton and extensive draught proofing has taken place in Arkwright. The development also boasts one of the biggest sedum roofs in the country, over 2500 square metres of which will help to improve biodiversity in the city centre as well as insulate the rooms below. The roof will be made up of 13 different varieties of sedum that will also provide food and nesting material for insects and birds.

Fairtrade

NTU has been awarded Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation. Fairtrade products are available in all NTU catering outlets. When you purchase a Fairtrade item you can enjoy it in the knowledge that producers are receiving a fair price for their products.

What can I do?

Reduce, re-use, recycle. Be environmentally aware in your day to day life. For instance, switch off lights and electrical equipment when not in use. This will save you money as well as energy. Re-use items such as carrier bags (or better still, use a cotton bag) and old print outs as scrap paper. Recycle your waste - it only takes a minute to separate paper, plastic, tins etc and use the separate waste collection facilities on offer.
