Nottingham Trent University has developed its Students in Classrooms initiative over the last twelve years, as part of its work to raise awareness of the opportunities available in higher education.

These initiatives are aimed particularly at communities, schools and colleges where progression rates into university are lower than expected. As part of this work it was felt that if local young people were to be given the best chance of progressing on to university, more needed to be done to help support local schools raise not only the aspirations of pupils, but also their attainment. This is why the Students in Classrooms programme was initiated.

In 2008, Students in Classrooms became part of the Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach team, who coordinate a large range of activities with schools and colleges, across the country. As part of this, new opportunities for students to participate in a broader range of activities are also being planned.

Students in Classrooms' work includes partnerships with The University of Nottingham and more than eighty local schools, colleges and academies. Previous partnerships have included more than ten years work for The Training and Development Agency for Schools, and a variety of government funded initiatives. In the 2010/11 academic year more than 500 students undertook over 36,000 hours of work as part of these initiatives.
