There are fantastic benefits for everyone who gets involved in Students in Classrooms. Although the exact nature of the benefits can vary from scheme to scheme, all of our opportunities offer:

  • a great opportunity to develop your employability skills and CV
  • the chance to gain access to personal development opportunities only available to students taking part in Students in Classrooms
  • comprehensive training to prepare you for your role and develop your skills further still
  • a fantastic experience to work with young people and help them realise their potential
  • the opportunity to make new friends both from university and the local community
  • flexible hours for committed individuals
  • regular income (for most schemes), and
  • a certificate to confirm your participation in the scheme.

Training

The Students in Classrooms team has developed a series of training programmes over the last ten years, which will ensure that you receive an excellent introduction to the types of situations and experiences that you will encounter. Each scheme has specifically tailored training which covers a wide variety of topic areas, such as:

  • the role and what to expect
  • effective communication skills
  • working with small groups and individuals
  • making the most of your placement
  • an introduction to the National Curriculum
  • safeguarding children
  • ...and much more!

Support

Help and support is always available for students taking part in the Student in Classrooms Schemes. As well as receiving training prior to undertaking your placement, you will receive regular support from the University, including:

  • help throughout the year by phone
  • regular email communication
  • one to one meetings when required
  • group review meetings
  • top-up training and
  • access to personal development sessions only open to students taking part in Students in Classrooms.

In addition to this, if you're working on a scheme which involves school based placements, you will also receive:

  • a school based induction
  • support from a school coordinator and
  • support from class teachers.
