How do I apply for one of the schemes?

In order to apply for one of the schemes you must attend an awareness raising meeting for the one you're interested in. If you're interested in more than one scheme, you'll need to attend a meeting for each. Details of these can be found on the individual scheme web pages.

Application forms and details of how to apply will be supplied at these meetings. We usually hold the majority of our meetings towards the start of the university academic year.

I'm not sure which scheme suits me best. What do I do?

If you're interested in more than one scheme, the best thing to do is come along to the awareness raising meeting for each one. At the meeting we'll provide much more information about what’s involved, which will help you to decide which is best for you.

You can apply for more than one scheme (using the same form), but if you're successful and we're oversubscribed you will usually only be offered the chance to take part in one. This is to ensure that we can offer opportunities to as many students as possible.

It is important to remember that whilst the prospect of doing two schemes may sound initially appealing, it is better not to undertake excess work which could be detrimental to your studies.

If you've been along to awareness raising meetings and you're still unsure what to do, or would like further advice, get in touch with us by email, telephone (0115 848 4203) or come along to see us.

I can't attend an awareness raising meeting. What should I do?

Please double check to make sure that you can't attend any of the awareness raising meetings for the scheme that you're interested in. Regardless of where you're studying you can attend any of our meetings at any of the campuses; so University of Nottingham students are welcome to attend meetings at Nottingham Trent University and vice versa.

If, after double-checking, you are definitely unable to attend any meetings for the scheme that you're interested in, the best thing to do is contact us. Whilst we can't guarantee that we'll always be able to help you out, we'll do our best.

If all of the awareness raising meeting dates have already passed, then we're afraid that you've missed out for the time being. However, it’s worth getting in touch with us and registering your interest, just in case we have more opportunities available later in the year.

Can I choose which school I am placed into if I'm doing a school based placement?

Usually, no. The Students in Classrooms team have partnerships with over 80 schools and have to take account of a wide range of factors when placing students into schools. This is not only to ensure that we can maximise the chances of you having a great placement, but also because we have to consider the aims and target learners for the schemes. However, we do take account of preferences wherever possible, so you can include this as part of any application that you submit.

I'm an international student. How do I know if I'm eligible to work in the UK?

As part of our recruitment we have a legal responsibility to ensure that only individuals who are entitled to live and work in the UK are employed by the University.

In all cases, before you commence work, we are required to confirm your eligibility to work by checking original documents. For the vast majority of international students this is a straightforward process and does not require additional paperwork. However, students from certain countries may be required to require additional evidence of their eligibility.

Further details of the university’s responsibilities can be found on the Human Resources web pages. If you have any specific questions relating to this process, please contact us.

Are there any other opportunities available?

There certainly are. The Schools, Colleges and Community Outreach team are also responsible for coordinating Nottingham Trent Volunteering, which provides voluntary placements for NTU students in a wide range of organisations. These range from sports coaching to gardening.

For more information email Caroline Day or telephone her on 0115 848 2379.

Students at The University of Nottingham can also find information about further opportunities to work as a Student Ambassador or a volunteer on The University of Nottingham Web site.
