Inspire Mentoring Scheme

Overview

Mentors offer guidance, support and personal direction to pupils from the ages of 13 to 17 who have the potential to progress onto higher education (HE).

Mentors work outside of the classroom primarily on a one-to-one basis with pupils. Mentoring can include guidance on topics such as routes into HE, revision and exam technique, planning skills, motivation, self-confidence and much more. As a result of this support, the scheme also aims to impact positively upon pupil attainment levels.

Location

Placements take place in schools across Nottingham and the surrounding area, including Ashfield and Mansfield.

Who can apply?

The scheme is open to all students studying higher education qualifications at Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.

As a number of opportunities are based in schools in the Ashfield and Mansfield areas, applications are also particularly welcome from students who live in those areas or who have access to their own transport.

Commitment required

Placements run from December to May with students expected to undertake approximately four hours of mentoring per week, for ten weeks. The exact timing of these sessions is flexible to fit around studies of both the mentor and the pupil, but weekly attendance is preferred.

During the university Christmas and Easter breaks, mentors are asked to undertake some brief eMentoring exchanges with their pupils, wherever possible. The commitment required for this aspect is expected to be in the regions of three to four hours over the holiday period.

How many places are available?

There are approximately 130 places available.

How much will I earn?

Mentors will receive £26 for each week of four mentoring sessions undertaken (equates to £6.50 per mentoring session). This is paid as a tax free bursary.

How do I find out more?

The application deadline has now passed for this academic year.
